Rollerski: “I had a lot of fun today”, says Mathis Desloges
Just a few kilometres from home on Sunday, Villardien Mathis Desloges took victory “almost on home soil” at the French Rollerski Championships in Autrans (Isère). In the 33.3-kilometre classic-style event, he put on a show to win solo.
“I live in Villard, which is just a few kilometres away, and I train on these roads all year round, so it’s a bit like being at home,” smiled Mathis Desloges to Nordic Magazine after the finish line.

The 23-year-old cross-country skier quickly settled into the lead on the first of five loops. “On the first lap, after three or four kilometres, I said to myself: ‘Nothing ventured, nothing gained’, so why shouldn’t it be me today?

In the second round, he was joined by Victor Lovera. ” We train together all year round and we’re friends before rivals, so we got on really well,” he explains. The duo held off the peloton for a long time, before Mathis Desloges went on alone in the fourth loop: “ I believed in it right to the end, it was a close call, but it did it.

This classic 33.3km mass-start, unprecedented for a French summer cross-country skiing championship, put bodies to the test. There was a lot of flat ground and a lot of wind, with a strong tailwind on the first part and then a headwind on the second,” explains the man from Isère. It wasn’t easy being on my own, but it’s a format I love: a bit long, with a lot of management and tactics. I really enjoyed myself today.
“I can’t wait to get on the box in the World Cup, that’s my big goal”.Mathis Desloges at Nordic Magazine
This victory also comes just after a major training camp in Font-Romeu (Pyrénées-Orientales) with the French team for Mathis Desloges. “We had a really good block there, it’s a site we love, with great training conditions. Now I’m going to spend a few days at home before heading back to the national centre in Prémanon to take advantage of the facilities. After that, it won’t be long before I’m in the snow for the final stretch of my preparation.

Already the winner of the Challenge Vincent Vittoz individual skate event at the end of August, the Villardian is making no secret of his ambitions for the coming winter: “All summer long, at every competition, I responded well. The work we’ve been doing with the Federation is working wonders. I’m just getting better every year. Now I can’t wait to get on the box in the World Cup, that’s the big goal.
