German jumper Markus Eisenbichler will be hanging up his skis after the World Cup final at the end of the month in Planica (Slovenia). It’s a special place for the 33-year-old jumper, who celebrated his first individual World Cup victory in 2019 here. It was also in Slovenia that he set the German record with a jump measuring 248 metres.
“I’ve thought about it a lot over the last few months, and my intuition tells me that now is the right time. It feels good, he declared in a press release from the German Ski Association. Ski jumping has been my life, with its ups and downs and emotions that are difficult to express. I’ve been able to celebrate some incredible successes: world champion titles, world cup victories, medals. Successes I could only dream of as a child. I’ve realised my dream and I’m infinitely grateful. But I’m also looking forward to what lies ahead.”

Markus Eisenbichler has won six world champion titles – one individual in Seefeld (Austria) in 2019 and five team gold medals – which is a German record.
He has won two other individual bronze medals – at the 2017 World Championships in Lahti (Finland) and at the 2020 World Ski Flying Championships in Planica (Slovenia) – as well as two other team medals at the World Ski Flying Championships in 2020 and 2022. He also won an Olympic team bronze medal in Beijing (China) in 2022.
