Therese Johaug chooses Greece to train

Unlike many cross-country skiers, Therese Johaug has chosen to train in a sunny country: Greece. With less than two months to go before the start of the winter season, it’s an original choice that the Norwegian is happy to make. “I know that most of my team-mates and rivals train on wheeled skis, in the forest, at altitude? I do just the opposite,” she laughs in an interview with VG. I also know that a lot of people talk about, and even judge, what I do, saying that I’m doing it wrong, but I feel comfortable doing it this way.

On the agenda for her week in the Greek sun: an intensive training camp with running, boxing, weight training… But no skiing! ” I needed a break from my daily routine, to get away from home and get out of my routine, and this camp was the perfect idea! In the end,it gives me a lot of energy, because I don’t have to deal with the mental burden of my daughter and the guilt of leaving her.

And for all her detractors who remind her that perhaps she shouldn’t train so hard if she wants to arrive in good shape at the start of the winter, Johaug points out that she now knows her body, knows how to find the right balance and has planned to rest in October. ” You certainly can’t expect the same from a 20-year-old as you can from Therese. She knows herself, she has experience and that’s her strength,” says her training partner in Greece, Sweden’s Anna Jönsson Haag .

I know when I can put in the most effort and when I need to rest. I have a bank of information about my body and my training at my disposal, and all I have to do is make the most of it in preparation for the winter” concludes Johaug.

Erik Valnes aims for 4 medals in Trondheim

At the Trondheim World Championships, a number of cross-country skiers will be local favourites. Obviously, in the men’s race, the media are constantly talking about Johannes Høsflot Klæbo, the great favourite, but also about the potential return of Petter Northug Jr. However, there is another local who could be the big favourite at these Championships: Erik Valnes.

He could take part in at least 4 distances,” says national team coach Eirik Myhr Nossum, speaking to Langrenn.com. And that’s exactly what Valnes is hoping for: “It’s been a good summer, and I feel fit and ready for winter,” he tells the media during a training session. I want to line up in as many races as possible at the Worlds.

Erik Valnes could start in the sprint and the team sprint, but also in the 10km and the men’s relay. “ I can’t imagine him competing in the 20km skiathlon and the 50km,” adds Nossum.

This is an opportunity for the Norwegian cross-country skier to avenge the failure of his last World Championships in Planica: after a fall in the sprint, he was not selected for either the team sprint or the relay, while his latest results show that he is a real contender for an individual medal in both the sprint and the 10km .

Simen Hegstad Krüger goes for gold in the 50 km

Simen Hegstad Krüger is already guaranteed to compete in two different distances at the Trondheim World Championships: the 20km skiathlon and the 10km classic , where he is the reigning champion in Planica in 2023. But it’s another victory he’s aiming for: the 50km! It’s the distance for which I have the greatest hopes of winning,” he tells the Langrenn.com website.

Especially as Krüger has revenge on his mind. The Norwegian still doesn’t understand why, despite two gold medals, he wasn’t selected to line up at the start of the Planica 50km classic. We talked about it with Eirik Myhr Nossum afterwards, and I like the fact that we can discuss the selections, but I have to admit that I still don’t understand why I wasn’t selected”, says the cross-country skier once again.

So will he be selected this winter? I’m good at perfecting my skills and being ready when it counts,” explains Krüger. That’s why in seasons without major events, I can be a bit behind and then come back to the fore at the big events. But this year, I’d also like to take part in a number of World Cup stages, because that’s the best preparation you can have.

However, Simen Hegstad Krüger prefers to warn that he will need a few competitions to be in top form, as he is aiming to peak in February for the Worlds. What’s more, he caught covid for the third time in the off-season, got married and moved house, all of which may have delayed his preparations.

The future of the national team is a cause for concern

It’s official: at least two sponsors of the Norwegian national cross-country skiing team will be jumping ship after the Trondheim Worlds, including their main sponsor Sparebank 1. It’s high time cross-country skiing found new sponsors, but it’s not that simple…

It’s going to be a hard landing, and we have to realise that cross-country skiing will probably no longer be Norway’s number one sport,” said Petter Northug Jr in comments reported by Dagbladet. Pessimistically, the retired skier adds: “Cross-country skiing as a sport will always exist, but we need people in our federation who understand the critical situation we are going to face,” he says. They need to protect the athletes but also realise that interest in cross-country skiing has declined both in Norway and abroad.

Enrst Lersveen, commentator for Nettavisen, agrees with Northug and goes even further. ” The future looks bleak for cross-country skiing, and it’s clear that it’s not going to get any better when the person most talked about in the media all summer and autumn is a retiree,” he adds, referring to the numerous articles on Northug’s potential return to the top level.

It’s true that it’s difficult to sign new sponsorshipcontracts , we make no secret of that,” says Cathrine Instebø, who is in charge of the issue at the federation.

Athletes also have a contribution to make,” says Therese Johaug in an interview with VG. We have a responsibility to share more about our sport, to be visible, not least on social networks. Everyone needs to understand that the world has changed and that we need to make more of an effort.

Companies expect the athletes they sponsor to be visible, and this means more than just a logo on a racing ski suit. Sponsors now want athletes to post their products on social networks.

Therese Johaug tries to share her daily life more often, while Johannes Høsflot Klæbo often publishes sponsored posts on Instagram. It’s important,” says Johaug. Yes, we have to ski fast and perform well, but we have time outside to keep our sponsors happy and to ensure that they continue to invest in our team.

The cross-country skier nevertheless points out that athletes should not be forced to do things that they are not comfortable with. ” You have to play with everyone’s qualities and skills so that both sponsors and athletes are happy with the partnership. It’s a team effort,” she concludes.

Jumpers have lost popularity

The jumpers have given themselves a very bad image in this whole affair,” says Ernst Lersveen, former TV2 consultant and now a journalist with Nettavisen. The Norwegian is categorical: by ousting Alexander Stöckl from the national team so publicly, the national team ski jumpers have not gained in popularity with the sport’s fans and spectators.

They don’t deserve to be seen as bitter, acerbic people, but they got themselves into this situation, says Lersveen in Dagbladet. Normally, when there’s friction between coaches and athletes, it’s nothing, you just talk about it! In this case, it turned into carnage.

On the Norwegian national vaulting team‘s social networks , many fans have compared the events to a knife being plunged into Stöckl’s back, while others say they will now support Poland (the team for which the Austrian now works as sporting director).

To win back the public’s trust, they will need to regain their self-confidence first and then perform on the springboard, and people will get used to seeing Stöckl elsewhere and will forgive them as soon as they get good results,” concludes Ernst Lersveen.

Sondre Ringen on the road to recovery

In 2023, during the Christmas Continental Cup in Engelberg (Switzerland), Sondre Ringen fell heavily on the springboard. An accident he still has no memory of almost a year later, but whose consequences he is still suffering.

I woke up the next day in hospital, hurting all over, and suffered three brain haemorrhages and a concussion”, he tells NRK. The result: more than six months unable to make the slightest effort, with even standing up and walking causing him headaches that were almost unbearable. I was almost totally bedridden until June,” continues the Norwegian jumper. I was useless, I couldn’t do anything and that was very hard to accept.

For just over three months, Sondre Ringen has been able to get out of bed again and do some activities. But when I’m tired, the headaches come back, and I think I’m going to have to get used to them,” he adds resignedly to the Norwegian channel. All the medical staff I’ve spoken to tell me it will pass, so I can only believe them and wait.”

But from October, the ski jumper has one hope: to be able to put his skis back on and get back to the top of the jumps. I don’t want the jump in Engelberg to be my last, I’ll have a lot of work to do to hope to get back to the top level and I’ll see where I stand when I’ve been able to jump again, concludes Ringen. But in any case, whether or not I decide to continue my career, I’ll make the decision on the springboard, after I’ve jumped.
