XC Skiing: Martin Johnsrud Sundby targets a personality problem
Petter Northug Jr is a legend in his discipline. Without a doubt, the cross-country skier is one of those athletes who have marked a generation, and he will likely remain in the history books of XC skiing for many years. Very often, the significance of these athletes is also measured outside their field of expertise. But in this regard, too, the native of Mosvik (Norway) has distinguished himself on multiple occasions.
According to Martin Johnsrud Sundby, it is his unique personality that the new skiers lack. “No one has taken up the torch, no one has completely dominated this sport since Petter’s departure. It is a problem,” said his former teammate to VG.
For him, cross-country skiing is always “a fantastic sport” but it lacks standout profiles: “Nowadays, athletes no longer give their opinions. There are skiers who have won a hundred World Cup races but go unnoticed.”
In this perspective, Martin Johnsrud Sundby hopes that his teammate will qualify for the World Championships in Trondheim (Norway) even if the task seems complicated: ” For cross-country skiing, it would be fantastic if he were there, he could save a lot of things. Unfortunately, there are five or six skiers faster than Petter on paper, but he must be taken seriously. No one has his mental strength. ” So, it remains to be seen whether the 38-year-old Norwegian can still carry his torch at the next world competitions.
